Window Sill Replacement – A DIY Guide For Your Next Weekend Project!

Window sills are very exposed to elements, which makes them prone to damage. As such, you will need to replace these once in a while if you want to make sure that you don’t have rotting window sills. This article gives the basics of window sill replacement.

Window sill replacement is quite easy, if you know the basics of doing carpentry. To do so, please follow the following steps:

Getting Started – Window Sill Replacement

Measure the window sill that you will be replacing, and then purchase a window sill from the hardware store, making sure that the piece you purchase is the right size.

If your window has a trim, remove this first, making sure that you do this carefully so that you will be able to re-install this once you’re finished with window sill replacement. You may also need to remove the apron, stool, and stop molding as well, if your window has these.

Replacing the Window Sill – Window Sill Replacement

Pry the old sill up. If it is deeply embedded on the wall or window, you can saw it out, or else make cuts on the sides and/or center from where you can pry out the window sill.

Caulk and paint the replacement window sill, making sure that the paint that you use is waterproof. That way, you will be able to add some protection to the replacement part to make it less prone to water damage. Try to get a paint color that’s similar to or as close to the paint color of the other window sills that you have in your property. Alternatively, you can paint all of the other window sills in your home to make sure that the paint matches with the new one you installed.

Final Steps – Window Sill Replacement

Install the replacement window sill. If it doesn’t fit right, saw the ends to make it easy to slip in the notch left by the old window sill. Ideally, the fit should be somewhat tight instead of loose. Make sure to use rust-resistant nails when you secure it in place to make the window sill last longer.

Make sure to do window sill replacement only if you actually have some skills in doing DIY repairs, otherwise, it may be a better idea to hire an expert to do the work for you. Among other things, experts can also give you the right advice on whether window sill replacement is the right choice or if you need to do something else, such as simply repairing your old window sill or replacing the entire window already.
